Student Profile: Sandra K. Jones
Sandra Jones, C'2011, is a biochemistry major who is doing what she can to help protect and preserve America's wetlands. This summer, she served as an intern with the Student Conservation Association, and created an innovative summer program for children at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia Beach, Va.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jones, who currently lives in Warner Robins, Ga., aspires to be a research scientist. She is a member of Spelman's Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program and Chemistry Club; and Alpha Lambda Delta, a national honor society for first year students.
As an intern with SCA, a nonprofit organization that offers conservation internships and
summer trail crew opportunities to more than 3,000 people each year, Jones created and facilitated the summer sessions at Back Bay.
One of the programs she initiated called "Turtle Day," is designed to educate students about the various types of sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead turtles who are most commonly nest on the Refuge's beaches. In addition to educating and engaging students in hands-on activities at Back Bay, Jones visited elementary schools in the Virginia Beach area to interest them in conservation at an early age.
