Spelman Spotlight - Student Profiles

Student Profile: Isis Rose, C'2012

Isis Rose, C'2012, is tackling hunger one community at a time. On Tuesday, November 3, at 5 p.m., Rose, a sociology major, will host a meeting for students interested in initiating a Campus Kitchens Project at Spelman College.

Inspired as a 2009 Shepherd Poverty Alliance summer intern at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., Rose helped provide congregate meals to residents in low-income housing complexes and adult day centers.

"The time I spent in Lexington opened up my eyes to how easy it can be to make a difference in my community," said Rose, who plans to further her studies in nonprofit management and work in the nonprofit/community outreach sector.

A national student-run nonprofit organization dedicated to food recovery and delivery, Campus Kitchens intercept excess food from dining halls, food banks, local restaurants, and other charitable organizations. Food is repackaged (and sometimes cooked from scratch) and delivered as hot meals, buffet-style at the partner agency, or meals are boxed and delivered to clients' homes. The meeting will be held in the Cosby Academic Center building.
