Student Profile: Asya Jones
Rising Junior Explores Statistics at Rice University
Mathematics major, NIMH-COR scholar and ASPIRE peer facilitator Asya Jones, C'2011, has been selected to participate in the Rice University Summer Institute of Statistics, an intensive, 10-week program designed to expose students to careers in statistics.
One of 17 students selected for the program, Jones spent the first four weeks taking a statistics class and a lab introducing her to statistical software. Her summer research project deals with body mass index and the impact it has on health. Currently, her research group is critiquing a study that claims populations with more obese members make significant contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming.
Through statistical analysis and probing into methods used to estimate the increase in GHG emissions, she and her team members are analyzing validity of the study. At the end of the program, Jones and other participants will present their research findings to an advisory committee of nationally and internationally renowned scientists and mathematicians at Rice University.
