Continuing Education Department Offers ' Virtues Project' Training Workshops to Awaken the Gifts of Character
Spelman College's continuing education department will host "The Virtues Project: Awakening the Gifts of Character," a workshop for parents, educators, counselors, volunteers, leaders and professionals that can help them get the character slogans off the wall and put into action.
The Virtues Project is designed to provide personal tools for living the best life possible. Participants in the program will learn simple ways to develop virtues in themselves and others; how to create a culture of caring at home, school and work; how to mentor others effectively; how to transform bullies into leaders; five proven strategies for awakening idealism and kindness, positive discipline based on restorative justice; and how to inspire cooperation instead of requiring compliance.

The Continuing Education Program, established in 1980, is based on the premise that learning is a lifelong process. To help individuals achieve the goal of lifelong learning, the program provides education and training to foster career development, personal fulfillment and academic achievement; it reaches out to learners of all ages and of varying cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
The major components of the program are described below. Other programs are created and implemented as needed.
The Children's Dance and Drama Program
The Children's Dance and Drama Program provides year-round opportunities for children ages 5-13. The program was started in 1961 to offer dance classes for children of faculty members. Since then it has expanded its offerings to the community. Today, the program has three components: The regular term (September through May), the six-week Summer Dance and Drama Institute, and the performing arts company, The Children's Performance Theatre. Students in the Theatre group have performed throughout the City of Atlanta, including the Festival of Trees, The National Black Arts Festival , and the Six Flags Guest Artists Program.

College Prep Institute
The College Prep Institute is a two-week commuter program for 9th and 10th grade young women, who are college bound and seeking an exceptional experience from which to launch their college search and preparatory process.
The Institute features hands-on seminars, Internet sessions and lessons on test preparation, and preparing for college.

The Early College Summer Program
The Early College Program started in 1986, is traditionally a residential college preparatory program. Due to campus development during the summer of 2007, it will be a commuter program only. Students enroll in English and mathematics, for which they may be eligible to earn college credit. Generally, 10 to 15% of the students are high school graduates; most of the students have just completed their junior year of high school. In addition to the academic courses, students participate in seminars on leadership and preparing for college life.

HeadStart
The Professional Training for Head Start and Early Head Start Teachers is a program funded by the Administration of Children and Families of the US Department of Health and Human Services. Spelman College (Continuing Education Program and Department of Education) and Atlanta Metropolitan College are partners to provide the Connector, Sheltering Arms, and the YMCA , all local Head Start Centers, with college preparation for teaching staff, instructional design training for teachers, and parenting skills training for parents.

Pauline E. Drake Program
(formerly known as the Gateway Program)
The Pauline E. Drake Program is for mature women who wish to begin or continue college studies. Students who enroll may be first-time students, transfer students, or college graduates.

The Quality First Customized Training Program
The Quality First Customized Training Program offers an innovative curriculum to meet the needs of profit and nonprofit organizations. Usually, training is offered at the work place and may cover a wide range of subjects.

Summer Conferences and Summer Housing
The Continuing Education Office is your contact if you are looking for a location for a conference, training session or housing for summer program participants.
Limited space is available during June and July for educational programs. Accommodations are not available for social events such as weddings, receptions, and fashion shows; nor can we accommodate athletic or physical education programs. Summer Programs and Opportunities
Summer opportunities for participants of all ages to live and learn on campus are managed by different divisions of the college.
The programs provide academic, cultural and professional development activities for young children, high school and college students, professionals and adults.
